Feeding the Gilmore Girls

The Gilmore Girls- Lorelai, Rory, Sookie, Paris, and Lane- fled a hobby farm during the bitter 2012 winter cold in San Diego.  Ok, that sounds a little dramatic, really, the Girls were adopted from a friend who was moving from San Diego to Albuquerque. She couldn’t transport them along with the rest of her menagerie of kids and critters, oh, and it was 70° and sunny.  I had always wanted chickens (for eggs, not meat because seriously, once they’re named they’re family), so I made the 7 hour drive from San Miguel to San Diego.  I spent 2 days learning all about chickens while packing my friend’s house.  I rented a U-Haul trailer and loaded up their little coop and the Girls to make the 10 hour pilgrimage home.  I was HAULIN’ CLUCK just like the big rigs in the slow lane!  Country friends have said, “but Erin, you could have bought chicks for $1.99 at the feed store!”  To which, I respond, “yeah, but this makes for a far better rags-to-riches story.”

I love the diversity of their breeds. Each Girl has a personality and her own quirks:
Lorelai- Speckled Sussex, Sweet demeanor and calm as they come
Rory- Rhode Island Red, Funny little gal who is missing her breast and under wing feathers
Sookie- Buff Orpington, Constantly broody and kind of a dumb blonde
Paris- Marans, The bossy one of the group…everyone follows her lead or gets out of the way
Lane- Americauna, Our best layer…we think…although she is the only one who lays the pretty blue/green eggs, so it’s hard to tell
